Mosaici Sonori is an octet for flute, oboe, violin, viola, violoncello and three nippers and mosaicists hammers, composed by Matteo Ramon Arevalos for the Mosaici Sonori Ensemble of Ravenna.
It is a musical tribute, in the form of a kind of walk to discover the incredible Byzantine works of art in Ravenna.
The octet has a single time signature but is divided into three movements:
– andata – passing through and imagining Ravenna at the time of the construction of the basilicas on irregular islands immersed in water and pinewoods;
– mosaici sonori – characterised by the rhythmic sound of three mosaicists who start cutting mosaic tiles, with the nippers and hammer, of three different materials, enamels, limestone and marble respectively, thus producing three different sounds which form a counterpoint with the instrumental part immersed in an ecstatic atmosphere;
– ritorno – the same melodic motif as the andata embellished and characterised musically by glissandos in the violin, viola and violoncello; a musical effect is thus produced that evokes the unusual refraction of light in Byzantine mosaics due to the technique of positioning the mosaic tiles at different depths.
